Rainy Day Activities: Making DIY Spa Products with Tweens

Rainy day activities like making DIY spa products with tweens turn a bleak afternoon into something pretty and practical. Share a few easy crafts that will feel glamorous and teach girls how to save money by making their own beauty products. By now, you probably know that just about everything in your kitchen can be combined into a recipe that’s great for your skin or hair. We’re going to focus on a few simple products that appeal to tweens without any complicated chemistry or safety issues.

Lip gloss: Mix one part bees wax with two parts coconut oil. Heat the mixture in your microwave until blended. Stir in flavorings like honey or peppermint.

Glitter lotion: For a simple treat, mix cosmetic glitter into any bottle of body lotion. Set out a buffet of fun colors in colorful bowls to play with.

Bath powder: Soak a cotton ball in vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil. Drop it into the bottom of a large glass jar. Pour in cornstarch or another natural base like Kaolin Clay or rice flour. Let it sit for a few days and then shake.

Scented pillow: Cut equal size rectangles out of fabric. Stitch the sides together leaving a gap on one side a few inches long. Stuff your cushion with lavender, flax seeds or other fragrant fillings and then sew it up. A larger and longer version makes a great neck roll while tiny pillows can be used on your eyes. Spend one-on-one time with your daughter or encourage her to invite friends over. Serve tea, scones and finger sandwiches. Wear sweats so you’ll feel comfortable and won’t have to worry about stains as you prepare and sample your goods. Keep a supply of pretty gift bags and empty plastic containers on hand so your guests can take their creations home if they like.

Women and girls of all ages love a spa experience. Bring the fun home by using DIY crafts to launch your own signature line.
